Cowboys first-round survey: Grading the team’s pick of Tyler Booker

The Dallas Cowboys pulled a nifty head-fake in the first round of the NFL draft. Almost everybody expected them to take a wide receiver, either Tetairoa McMillan or Matthew Golden. McMillan went off the board early, then the team bypassed Golden, Emeka Egbuka and every other wide receiver.

Instead, the Cowboys went back to one of their favorite maneuvers, drafting an offensive lineman in the first round. And for good measure his name was also Tyler, this time Tyler Booker, a guard from Alabama.

The team has made a big point about being able to run the ball effectively under Brian Schottenheimer, and Booker will certainly help there. Zack Martin’s retirement opened up a competition, and Booker looks like he will be the winner.

This wasn’t the way most people thought the Cowboys would go, but they have been diligent about re-stocking their offensive line, so maybe it shouldn’t be a total surprise. Taking a guard at 12 is usually not the top drafting strategy, but the Cowboys have been unconventional before in taking offensive linemen and it has worked out.
