Qualcomm has now confirmed its plans to launch its next-gen flagship SoC at the upcoming Snapdragon Summit later this month. The chipset will be branded as the “Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5” and will directly succeed last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Qualcomm has long scheduled its Snapdragon Summit for later this month. The company has now confirmed that it will be releasing its next-gen flagship chipset at the event, while also revealing the actual branding of the SoC.
As shared officially, Qualcomm will be launching the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at the Snapdragon Summit slated to be held towards the end of the month. This chipset will directly succeed the Snapdragon 8 Elite as Qualcomm’s premium SoC for the year, and will rival chipsets like Apple’s new A19 Pro and MediaTek’s upcoming Dimensity 9500.
It’s unclear why Qualcomm has made such changes to its naming scheme, although it’s widely believed to have something to do with the number “4” being considered unlucky in China. That would partly explain the progression from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5—with “Elite” being synonymous with the company’s Oryon cores.
