Carney will spend two days in Mumbai (February 27–28) engaging with a large range of Indian and Canadian stakeholders.  His engagements would feature talks with CEOs, industrial and financial experts, innovators, educators, and representatives of Canadian pension funds operating in India.

What on the agenda

Following his stay in Mumbai, he will travel to New Delhi on March 1 for delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House on March 2.

According to the MEA, these talks are intended to examine the India-Canada strategic partnership in a variety of sectors, including energy, vital minerals, and research, while also aligning government policy with private sector objectives through the India-Canada CEOs Forum.

Normalising ties

This visit is viewed as a significant step in normalising relations after years of diplomatic strain.

According to a report in Reuters, Carney has sought closer connections with China, Middle Eastern countries, and India in an effort to minimise Canada’s reliance on the United States and establish a new global trading system driven by what he refers to as middle-power countries.

Relations between Canada and India hit rock bottom  a few years ago after then-PM Justin Trudeau made bombshell allegations that the Indian government was involved in the death of a Canadian citizen, also a prominent Sikh separatist. India has consistently denied any such links.

Speaking with Reuters, Goldy Hyder, President of the Business Council of Canada, said, “This is a business trip aimed at growing the economy to give Canadians more economic sovereignty.”
