Samsung on Saturday (July 19) announced record-breaking pre-orders for its newly launched Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7, and Galaxy Z Flip7 FE smartphones in India. The company said it secured 210,000 pre-orders within the first 48 hours — a figure nearly on par with the 430,000 pre-orders its flagship Galaxy S25 series garnered earlier this year.
“The record pre-orders for our ‘made in India’ foldable smartphones reinforce our belief that young Indian consumers are quick to adopt the latest technology,” said JB Park, President and CEO, Samsung Southwest Asia. “The success of the new devices is a stepping stone for our larger goal — the mainstreaming of foldable smartphones in India.”
The Galaxy Z Fold7
is Samsung’s lightest and slimmest foldable yet, weighing 215 grams and measuring just 8.9mm thick when folded. The Fold7 also brings the first 200MP camera to the Galaxy Z series, something that was previously exclusive to the Galaxy S series.
The Galaxy Z Flip7, meanwhile, sports Samsung’s largest FlexWindow yet — a 4.1-inch Super AMOLED cover screen that stretches edge-to-edge — alongside a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display. It’s also the slimmest Flip model so far, weighing 188 grams and measuring 13.7mm when folded. The Flip7’s battery sees an upgrade to 4,300mAh.

India defies global foldable slowdown
Samsung’s milestone comes at a time when the global foldable smartphone market is facing headwinds. According to Counterpoint Research, foldable shipments in 2024 rose a modest 2.9% year-on-year despite several brands reporting double- and triple-digit growth. Analysts attributed the tepid performance to a tough Q4 for Samsung amid geopolitical challenges and OPPO scaling back production of its budget clamshell models.
Looking ahead, 2025 is expected to mark the first year of negative growth for the global foldables market. “I don’t see many positives this year, and we are actually expecting negative growth for the segment, which will be a first,” said Jene Park, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint. However, the market is projected to rebound strongly in 2026.
Counterpoint’s latest report suggests that despite this year’s pullback, the foldables segment is far from stagnating. “At the moment, this doesn’t look like a market that is plateauing – it looks like a market that is about to transform,” noted Calvin Lee, Research Director at Counterpoint.
Samsung has consistently led India’s foldable segment, and this latest milestone builds on the success of previous generations. In July 2024, the company reported that pre-orders for its Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 had surged 40% year-on-year in just the first 24 hours, setting a then-record for its foldables in the country.
