Sept. 24 (UPI) — Speaking Wednesday before the U.N. General Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the international community to assist his country in its fight against Russia, warning that advances in weapon technology are putting the entirety of Europe under threat.
Zelensky said history has shown that Russia won’t stop driving the war “wider and deeper” across Europe unless it’s defeated.
“We have already lost Georgia in Europe. Human rights and the European nature of the state system are only shrinking there,” he said.
“Georgia is dependent on Russia, and for many, many years Belarus has also been moving towards dependence on Russia.”
Zelensky warned that Russia’s use of drones and other advanced weapon technology — including artificial intelligence — was a threat to the world.
“We are living through the most destructive arms race in human history,” he said.
Zelensky’s remarks come one day after U.S. President Donald Trump shifted his tone on the war in Ukraine. In a post on Truth Social, Trump showed renewed support and optimism for Ukraine in its fight against Russia after a meeting with Zelensky.
“Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump wrote.
“Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win.”
Trump had previously insisted that Ukraine must give up land to Russia as part of any peace deal. Experts estimate Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine’s territory, representing an area about the size of Ohio.
