The VW XL1 was the German giant’s idea of a car of the future, 10 years ago. It was supposed to do around 300mpg, equating to about a litre of fuel for 100 kilometres, but how economical is it really, away from the unrealistic conditions of a lab test? 

To find out, Matt and Alex headed out on an economy run for around 100 kilometres to see how it stacks up in the real world, with a target of 200mpg.
