The 2025 NFL schedule is being revealed over the next few days, but the first bit of news to drop is that the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will open the season against Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, September 4.
This is the first time in over 20 years that the Eagles and Cowboys will open the season against each other. The history of defending Super Bowl champions in Week 1 is encouraging, but it’s interesting that a game with pretty big implications for the NFC East will kick things off.
A backstory to the Cowboys-Eagles regular-season opener: Since 2004, 20 defending Super Bowl champions have played in the first game to open the season. Those teams have gone 15-5 in those games, including the Chiefs’ 27-20 win over the Ravens in last season’s opener. pic.twitter.com/C3x0q7d6Dd
The other options for the Eagles’ season opener were the Commanders, Giants, Bears, Lions, Raiders, Rams, or Broncos — all home opponents in 2025. Initial reports suggested that Chicago was a top candidate, but ultimately the league went with a division rival.
As it stands now, the Eagles have a lot more players returning than the Cowboys, and that chemistry and rapport should serve them well in Week 1. (Hopefully.)
