Oct. 13 (UPI) — A small plane crashed on a grassy median on Interstate 195 in Dartmouth, Mass., Monday morning, killing two people.

The plane went down around 8:15 a.m. EDT and burst into flames, Massachusetts State Police said.

“Preliminary information indicates the plane may have been attempting to land at New Bedford Regional Airport, though it does not appear that the pilot provided the airport with a flight plan or the number of souls aboard the aircraft,” state police said in a statement. “There is no information immediately available about the identity of the pilot or passengers.”

It’s not clear if the crash was caused by the weather, but there has been a nor’easter in Massachusetts since Sunday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the area.

The westbound lane of I-195 is expected to stay closed for several hours, the state’s department of transportation said.

Dartmouth is about 57 miles south of Boston and 28 miles southeast of Providence, R.I.
