Keon Coleman has found himself at the center of a bizarre, self-inflicted controversy involving Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula and general manager Brandon Beane.
Days after the firing of longtime coach Sean McDermott, Pegula interrupted Beane during a press conference to say McDermott’s staff pushed to acquire Coleman. The former Florida State wide receiver has struggled mightily since Buffalo took him in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft despite limited pass-catching competition around him. Buffalo even made Coleman a healthy scratch several times this season as both his discipline and ability have come into question.
“The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon,” Pegula said. “I’m not saying Brandon wouldn’t have drafted him, but he wasn’t his next choice. That was Brandon being a team player and taking advice of his coaching staff who felt strongly about the player.”
Pegula taking another parting shot at McDermott while embarrassing a player who’s still on the roster was certainly a choice. Things got even weirder when a video of Beane at the NFL Combine resurfaced on social media, contradicting Pegula’s Coleman comments.
The video shows Beane in a booth with other members of the Bills front office as assistant general manager Brian Gaine tells them Coleman ran a 4.57 40-yard dash. If Beane was unenthused by Coleman as Pegula suggested, you’d never know from his reaction.
“I’m glad [Coleman] ran that,” Beane said. “It’ll help to get him.”
Big yikes. A glaring lack of accountability has emerged from the Bills’ gutting Divisional Round loss to the Denver Broncos. That’ll have to change for Josh Allen and Co. to finally get over the Super Bowl hump.
