Chinese EV manufacturer BYD interested in joining F1 grid

Chinese automotive powerhouse BYD is reportedly exploring a high-profile entry into Formula 1.

In addition to F1, BYD is reportedly considering the World Endurance Championship (WEC) as an alternative or parallel avenue for its racing ambitions.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the Shenzhen-based manufacturer is evaluating a move into premier motorsport to bolster its international brand recognition.

BYD would have have two main ways to join the party: they could either try to convince the powers-that-be to let them in as a brand-new 12th team or, more likely, buy their way into an existing outfit.

A bid from a Chinese manufacturer would likely face a warm reception from FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who has long advocated for a 12th team.

“I still feel we need more teams than races,” Ben Sulayem said last year. “The drivers are coming to me and saying, ‘Please, no more races’.

“When we opened the Expression of Interest [in 2023], what was the outcome based on? Due process, competency framework, and without looking at which company it was, as long as it fulfilled the requirements of the FIA.

“We have an 11th team. I believe we should look into the performance of the 11th team, and then, if there is a Chinese [bid], and I will speak on behalf of FOM now in front of you, they will agree to that, because it is about sustaining the business.” he added, highlighting that China which already boasts a regular spot on the F1 calendar, is the logical next step for the sport’s growth.

Furthermore, F1’s 2026 engine regulations which place a much heavier emphasis on electrical power and sustainable fuels, plays directly into BYD’s core expertise in battery technology and hybrid powertrains.

At present, no decision has been made and BYD may opt against entering any form of motorsport competition.

BYD is known for making affordable electric and hybrid vehicles. Recently, the company overtook Tesla as the world’s top seller of EVs.

The 2026 season saw US manufacturing giant Cadillac join the F1 grid as the 11th team. The last time Formula 1 had more than 10 teams fighting for the championship was 10 years ago in 2016.
