June 28 (UPI) — Sen. Chris Coons announced he was briefly hospitalized on Sunday for injuries suffered during a traffic accident.

A statement issued by his office indicated the Delaware Democrat was transported to Beebe Hospital in Lewes, Del., and treated for minor injuries after a car in which he was a passenger was struck by a driver who “experienced medical injuries.”

The driver hit several vehicles during the incident, according to the statement.

Coons “is now home and expected to make a full and swift recovery,” his office said.

“Senator Coons is deeply grateful to the first responders for their prompt and professional response, including the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, as well as the capable doctors and nurses at Beebe Hospital, where he received excellent care,” the statement read.

“He feels relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash.”

The statement did not specify the location of the crash, but the Delaware News Journal reported it occurred on Savannah Road in Lewes.

Coons, Delaware’s senior senator, was first elected to the post in 2010. He serves as vice chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee after previously serving as its chairman.

He also serves on the Senate’s appropriations, foreign relations, judiciary and small business and entrepreneurship committees.
