Renesas Electronics, one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, has begun restoring production at its earthquake-damaged facilities in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture. The company resumed operations at its Nishiki chip assembly and test facility on the evening of July 29, 2026, just one day after a significant earthquake struck the region on July 28.
What happened and what’s still broken
The Kumamoto earthquake caused visible structural damage at Renesas facilities, including wall cracks and water leakage at the company’s Kawashiri wafer fabrication plant.
The Nishiki facility, which handles assembly and testing, passed safety checks on its clean rooms and was back online within roughly 24 hours.
Kawashiri is scheduled for a partial restart on August 5, 2026. Renesas is targeting a return to full pre-earthquake wafer input capacity within approximately three weeks after that partial restart.
The broader context: Kumamoto’s semiconductor corridor
Kumamoto Prefecture has become one of Japan’s most strategically important semiconductor regions. TSMC opened a major fabrication facility in the prefecture, and the broader area has attracted significant investment as Japan pushes to rebuild its domestic chip manufacturing capacity.
Renesas has been through disruptions before. The company’s Naka factory in Ibaraki Prefecture was severely damaged by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and again suffered a fire in 2021 that knocked out production for months. Kumamoto specifically also experienced devastating earthquakes in 2016 that disrupted semiconductor production.
What investors should watch
The August 5 partial restart date for Kawashiri is the next milestone. Wafer fabrication delays compound quickly because each chip goes through hundreds of processing steps over several weeks. A delay at the front end of that pipeline doesn’t show up in finished chip shortages for a month or two, meaning the real supply impact wouldn’t hit until September or October.
Renesas is a dominant supplier of microcontrollers and analog chips, particularly for automotive applications. Major automakers like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda depend on Renesas components.
The three-week timeline Renesas has set for full Kawashiri recovery is ambitious given the structural damage reported. Wall cracks and water leakage in a wafer fab can compromise the environmental controls that make semiconductor manufacturing possible.
