The two African nations opened digital platforms for embedded generation applications this week. Eswatini’s covers applications up to 2 MW, while Namibia’s accepts applications up to 500 kW.
The African nations of Eswatini and Namibia have both opened digital portals encompassing rooftop solar applications this week.
In Eswatini, the country’s embedded generation application platform, launched by the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA), is for applications up to 2 MW. It covers the processing of applications, supply licensing and solar PV installer registration. Further details are available via ESERA’s website.
The platform was launched during the 2026 edition of Eswatini’s international trade fair. Speaking during the launch, ESERA CEO Skhumbuzo Tsabedze said the platform is intended to improve transparency and accountability, increase efficiency, reduce administrative burdens and create more access to participation in embedded generation.
“We are not simply launching a digital platform,” Tsabedze said. “We are launching an enabler of Eswatini’s energy transition and a practical tool that supports greater participation in the green economy.”
In Namibia, the country’s Electricity Control Board (ECB) launched its online platform for small-scale embedded generation applications yesterday (September 1). The platform has been given its own dedicated website.
The platform covers installations up to 500 kW in size. A statement posted by ECB says the service will make it simpler and faster for citizens to apply, track and connect their energy system to the grid.
Speaking during the launch, Head of the EU Delegation to Namibia, Ana-Beatriz Martins, said development will help to maintain grid security and protect customers. “Digitalisation can make regulating the sector more transparent,” she added.
The launch of both portals makes the two countries among the first in Africa to launch digital platforms for small-scale solar applications. Other examples include South Africa, which runs an application portal for installations up to 1 MW.
The Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA) has tracked 30.1 MW of operational solar in Eswatini, according to figures in its project database, with an additional 123.2 MW under construction.
The association has identified 1.49 GW of operational solar in Namibia, 985 MW of which is located in the C&I sector. The database adds an additional 211.3 MW is under construction.
