PB Fintech’s 38% share price fall in two sessions takes its leveraged bets higher by 360%

The stock, which stood at 674th in the list of stocks with MTF positions, has now jumped to the 165th position in a matter of two sessions. The stock fell on Monday, September 28 as well, cooling off as much as 6% from the day’s high. However, the MTF positions for Monday will only be disclosed late Tuesday.

Shares of PB Fintech Ltd. have been on a three-day losing streak, ever since the draft IRDAI guidelines on distribution norms were released. The 38% sell-off across last Thursday, and Friday, including a 36% drop in one single session, has resulted in a multifold jump in its leveraged bets.

According to data available on the National Stock Exchange’s Margin Trading Facility (MTF) book until Friday, September 25, PB Fintech’s leveraged positions stood at ₹212 crore. That figure stood at just ₹46 crore on September 23, the evening of which the guidelines were released. That is a 361% jump in just two trading sessions.

The stock, which stood at 674th in the list of stocks with MTF positions, has now jumped to the 165th position in a matter of two sessions. PB Fintech has wiped out nearly ₹40,000 crore in market capitalisation over the course of the last three sessions. The draft IRDAI guidelines have proposed commission caps and a ban on dark patterns, through which PB Fintech generated a significant amount of business.

Brokerages such as HSBC have downgraded the stock, while many others retained their optimism with “buy” and “add” ratings, but significantly cut their price targets on the stock. HSBC and Motilal Oswal cut their price targets on PB Fintech to ₹1,150, which also happens to be the listing price of the stock back in 2021. The stock has closed exactly at that level on Monday.

In a note on Monday, brokerage firm Bernstein continued to maintain its “outperform” rating on PB Fintech with a target of ₹2,310, which now becomes the highest on the street for the stock, and projected an upside potential of 91% from last Friday’s closing levels.

At the same time, Investec, which had the highest price target for PB Fintech on the street at ₹2,500, cut its projections by 43% to ₹1,425. Kotak Institutional Equities also cut its price target on PB Fintech to ₹1,400 from ₹1,875 earlier. Both Investec and Kotak retained their respective “buy” and “Add” rating on the stock despite the steep target cuts.

25 analysts now cover PB Fintech, of which 16 of them still have a “buy” rating on the stock, five say “hold”, and four have a “sell” rating.

Shares of PB Fintech ended 1.4% lower on Monday, marking its third straight day of losses, at ₹1,150.1.
